ABOUT THE WORK:

Carmen Herrera is finally receiving long-deserved recognition for her arresting, hard-edge geometric compositions. Born in Havana in 1915, Herrera spent much of the 1930's and 1940's between Paris and Cuba before settling permanently in New York in 1954. Herrera was formally trained as an architect at the Universidad de la Habana and later studied at the Art Students League in New York from 1943 to 1945. She received recognition for her artistic accomplishments in post-war Paris, exhibiting alongside Theo van Doesburg, Max Bill and Piet Mondrian, but was long overlooked upon her return to the male-dominated New York art world. Despite breaking ground simultaneously with her peers, Barnett Newman and Leon Polk Smith, Herrera was often sidelined as a woman and a Latin American artist.

Herrera's work is chiefly concerned with formal simplicity and experimentation with bold colour. Through the use of sharp lines and stark colour contrasts, she creates dynamic and technically sophisticated compositions that reflect movement, balance and symmetry.

Under normal circumstances, we aim to ship all orders within 5 working days and often a lot quicker. However, in light of the uncertain times we are all currently facing, please refer to our dedicated COVID-19 page for our latest update on how we are managing orders, along with estimated shipping and transit times.

If there are any delays in shipping or if an artwork requires professional packing, including crating, we will get in contact with you as soon as possible after you have placed an order and let you know the estimated timings for delivery.
For orders placed through the website, you will receive an automated message once your order has been dispatched, which will include tracking details. We typically use DHL Express for UK and Worldwide shipping, with all shipments to mainland Europe sent by DHL Economy.


If your order is suspicious in nature or flagged as high risk for fraud, under our Terms of Business we reserve the right to cancel an order. We will notify you if this is the case and discuss alternative payment options.
