ABOUT THE WORK:
In collaboration with Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Christopher Wool created an installation whereby multiple prints were stacked in a gallery and exhibited for Printed Matter in Dia, New York, in 1993. It was specified that the artwork should remain at a height of eight inches and that gallery-goers could help themselves to individual sheets from the pile as a souvenir. As visitors removed the prints, the stack was depleted until the installation was gone. The text originates from Vasili Rozanov's definition of Nihilism.
Each time this artwork is displayed, typically in institutions and comprising a stack of printed offset lithographs, visitors can once again take individual sheets with them. They are not individually numbered or signed by the artist, and not in their own right considered a work of art but more part of the original installation. The one for sale on this page was printed and originally displayed at the Sammlung Hoffman in Berlin, Germany, in 2019.
